She Kills Monsters

Director’s Note

I dedicate this production to my sister, Melissa. She was the first person I ever came out to. She had no idea what to say, so she drove me to Blockbuster and rented But I’m a Cheerleader. I can see Melissa and I in Agnes & Tilly, and I am grateful to be able to tell this story.

This show has been a joy to work on as a Director—it is rare to find a show that aligns so exactly with my interests: Dungeons & Dragons, badass queer women, 90’s music, and heavy doses of stage combat and fantasy. I’ve directed dozens of shows and it’s so nice to work on a script that passes the Bechdel test with flying colors. The surreal balance of Agnes’ journey in the quest and in her real life outside of New Landia appeals to me, and Nguyen’s script offers so much room for creativity for designers.

The company that has created this production has been extraordinary. There are so many students working on the show who are new to PSU Theatre productions or taking on a new kind of role for the first time. The bravery and generosity of spirit in the company was palpable thought-out the process. The incredible work that students and my professional colleagues have put in onstage and behind the scenes creating this world is inspiring.

You don’t have to roll for initiative—just sit back and enjoy the bittersweet moments, humor, nostalgia, and incredible soundtrack this show has to offer.
