Music Director / Assistant Music Director

MUSIC DIRECTOR

Pre-requirements: A strong music background, including piano and choral skills

Credits: 1-2    Practicum Type: Advanced (letter grade)

Report To: Jessie Chapman jmchapman@usnh.edu

Location: As per production schedule

Time Commitment: Start of rehearsal process through closing performance

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching the music to the company
  • Attend run throughs and give notes when needed
  • Ensemble numbers – make sure the vocal parts are appropriately assigned for balance and harmony
  • Schedule, manage, and run Company Time with support from director/producer or appropriate faculty
    • Company time is a twice a week class
    • Create a schedule
  • Attend run-throughs and give notes relevant to the music
  • Provide recordings to assist singers in learning their parts

Anything Else: This position is not commonly done by a student, so it is not always available. A strong music background is more of a must than a suggestion.

ASSISTANT MUSIC DIRECTOR

Suggested Pre-requirements: A strong music background (strong piano skills preferred but not mandatory)

Credits: 1-2    Practicum Type: Advanced (letter grade)

Time Commitment: Start of rehearsal process through closing performance

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting music director with Music Directing tasks
  • Run difficult pieces with singers
    • Often concurrent with other rehearsals for the same show
  • If required, running a vocal warmup

Anything Else: The Assistant Music Director will sometimes be an actor already cast in the show.
