UPCOMING EVENTS

November 20 – 23

Martin McDonagh ‘s The Beauty Queen of Leenane, is the story of Maureen Folan, a simple and lonely woman in her early 40s, and Mag, her controlling, elderly mother. Set in the mountains of Connemara, a range located in Ireland’s Galway County and featuring sharp-peaked quartzite summits and ridges, this dark comedy provides insights into love, family, isolation, loneliness, and hope. The normal flow of Maureen and Mag’s daily routine, which includes a generous sampling of insults, tussles, and backbiting, is interrupted when Maureen finally has the opportunity to cultivate what is her first, and most likely last, romantic relationship. A chain of events unfolds, which are simultaneously horrific and tragically hilarious, as Mag does her best to interfere with her daughter’s potential love. Does love win out in the end? The award-winning The Beauty Queen of Leenane, which was premiered by the Druid Theatre Company in Galway, Ireland, has had successful runs at London’s West End, Off-Broadway, and Broadway. This production features PSU’s Professor of Acting Elizabeth Daily in the role of Mag, and it is directed by PSU alumna Catherine Jacobs.
