A Note from the Director
For over 150 years the story of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy has inspired scores of young readers and viewers (particularly women) to follow their hearts and their dreams. Alcott’s semi-autobiographical two volume novel was a staple in homes and libraries in the United States and United Kingdom since its release in 1869; and film adaptations of Little Women through the years starring the likes of: Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Winona Ryder, and Saoirse Ronan have introduced new generations to the story of the March girls. The 1994 film was a seminal work in my own coming of age; I could see myself in each of the March women and the setting was and is nostalgically familiar–since I was born in Concord, MA and grew up in New England.
Little Women has endured because of the authentic relationships between the characters and the cast of this production have spent the past month and a half practicing humanity through the laughter and tears conjured by this sentimental tale. We thought it fitting to create a world for our production with music at the center–since it is the music which separates this newer adaptation from the many versions that exist across a variety of media types. In PSU’s Theatre Program my niche has mostly been teaching Theatre History and directing Shakespeare–and I am proud that the first musical I’ve directed for the program is adapted from such an influential work of American Literature.
I am sorry that my own daughter and sister cannot see the show due to age and distance–in this production, I hope we have created something that can be enjoyed by all of today’s sisters, daughters, and even Laurie’s of the world.
