Designing is finding the best solution to a problem within a given set of circumstances. For this project, design students were given a very narrow set of circumstances to work within. We flipped the formula on how we pursue design. Instead of providing a script, we provided limited resources and a single concept. On day one, we presented a huge pile of trash. The students came into the theatre where we had a mountain of garbage and debris. Once they had looked through the offerings for a bit, we provided a two word concept: “Greek Mythology.” Students were permitted to add other reclaimed or reused material that they acquired on their own, so long as nothing new was included in the costumes.
