Passages

⇦ Back

The second feature this evening will convene in the lobby after a fifteen minute intermission:

Director’s Note

Passages began with a question we couldn’t quite answer: What happens when people carry grief quietly? What happens when we stop talking about the things that hurt us most? And what does it mean to keep showing up for each other when we don’t have language for what we’re feeling? These questions guided us, but the path for this project was anything but fixed.

This piece was built through a collaborative writer’s room process, inspired by the way television is often developed: fast, responsive, and deeply collective. Ideas were brought into the room and tested in real time.  Working in this way required flexibility, and we learned to let go of certainty and follow what felt alive in the room. That process mirrors the world of the play itself: a community trying to navigate uncertainty, listening for meaning without always knowing where it will lead.

Passages is not about a single perspective or a single truth. It is about proximity- how standing in different places changes what we see, what we hear, and what we believe. As you move through the space tonight, you will not see everything. That is intentional. Each path reveals a different emotional landscape. Just as the people of Township carry their experiences privately, you will leave with a version of the story that is uniquely yours.

Theatre, at its best, is a shared act of attention. It asks us to slow down, to notice, and to stay present with one another. In a time when distraction is constant, gathering in a room (or in this case, many rooms) to listen is a powerful choice. This company has embraced that idea fully. Their willingness to trust the process made this work possible.

Thank you for being here, for moving through the story with us, and for bringing your own listening to the experience. Like the town of Township, this production exists because people chose to stay, to care, and to create together.

We hope you carry something from it with you.
